Very special: Cave of Le Mas d’Azil

In the heart of the Le Plantaurel massif, the cave of Le Mas d'Azil was hollowed out by the river Arize.

It is the only cave in Europe that you can drive through by car.

This cave is an impressive natural tunnel with a road running through it.

The entrance is an immense gateway, 51 meters high and 48 meters wide!

Long ago, it was a refuge for people and animals.

The cave is a remnant from the Magdalenian, a prehistoric culture from 20,000 years ago.

A guided tour through the cave on the right bank tells you much about prehistoric times and the history of this place.

You will also see a sound and light diorama.

The nature in the Ariège is overwhelmingly beautiful. The rolling hills almost make you feel like you are in Tuscany, while in the background you can see the high peaks of the Pyrenees. There are fast-flowing mountain streams, remarkable caves, and beautiful reservoirs.
