The town of Saint-Lizier is one of the most beautiful places in France.

It has a rich history with a great religious heritage.

The Saint-Lizier Cathedral has an octagonal bell tower and was built from the 11th to the 15th century.

The church contains beautiful Romanesque frescoes.

You should not miss the stunning Romanesque cloister with its sculpted capitals.

The treasure of the Bishops of Couserans, which consists of metalwork including a silver reliquary bust of Saint Lizier, is also worth seeing.

Not far from the cathedral, the former Hôtel-Dieu is an 18th-century pharmacy with a beautiful collection of faience jars.

Under the arcade opposite the church, you can enjoy a cup of coffee or a menu du jour.

Walking, you discover Saint-Lizier. Gently climbing over cobbled alleys between old houses, you walk to the top of the village. There stands the 17th-century Episcopal Palace.

It is now a museum of art and folk tradition.

In the first two weeks of August, the Saint-Lizier festival takes place every year.

A famous event dedicated to classical music.

Monastery

One of the most beautiful sights in my opinion is the centuries-old monastery in the lower town.

Saint-Lizier actually consists of two parts: an enclosed upper section and a center surrounding the old, lower-lying Romanesque monastery. What is remarkable: both parts have their own cathedral. The cathedral belonging to the monastery dates (the oldest parts) from the eleventh century, and especially the tower is a fine example of regional architecture.

If you have been to Toulouse, you will notice many similarities in architectural style with what you can see there.

Pharmacy from the 19th century

The walls, adorned with Louis XV cherry and pear woodwork, are richly lined with pots, earthenware vases, and blown bottles that once contained a variety of brews derived from the plant, mineral, and animal kingdoms. In addition to the medicinal use and preparation of remedies for the sick, the pharmacy also served as a genuine operating room. Displayed in one of the cabinets in the corner of the room, historical instruments (saws, tourniquets, and others) were once used to perform surgical procedures directly on the marble table in the center of the pharmacy. This arsenal today bears witness to the evolution of medical practices through the centuries!

Our tip

The nature in the Ariège is overwhelmingly beautiful. The rolling hills make you feel almost as if you are in Tuscany, while in the background you can see the high peaks of the Pyrenees. There are fast-flowing mountain streams, remarkable caves, and beautiful reservoirs.
